Crown Thinning and Canopy Reduction details

What Is The Difference Between Thinning And Reduction?

People often ask for crown thinning and canopy reduction in the same breath, but the two do different things. Crown thinning removes a portion of the smaller branches spread through the crown, so more light passes through while the tree keeps its overall shape and size.

Canopy reduction shortens the longest branches, so the tree becomes smaller overall while the crown stays just as dense. Tell us what is bothering you about the tree and we will recommend which one it actually needs.

When Is Crown Thinning The Right Choice?

Crown thinning is the answer when a yard has gone too dark or a lawn will not grow underneath a tree. The work lets more light reach the ground without changing how the tree looks from the street.

Done properly, the tree should look almost untouched. If a tree comes back with its inner branches stripped bare and a tuft of growth left only at the tip of each limb, that is not thinning, and it actually makes the branch heavier at the end and more likely to fail.

When Is Canopy Reduction The Right Choice?

Canopy reduction is the answer when a tree has grown too large for where it stands, or when its longest branches are putting too much strain on the trunk below.

Shortening those branches reduces the leverage on every fork underneath them. On the moraine soils around parts of Aurora, where roots do not always anchor as deeply as the crown above them would suggest, that leverage matters more than it might elsewhere.

Does This Work Make A Tree Safe?

Crown thinning and canopy reduction both reduce risk, and less weight in the crown genuinely means less strain on the tree below it. That is real, and it is worth paying for.

Neither treatment repairs decay at the base of the trunk, and neither restores roots that have already shifted in the ground. If a tree has one of those problems, work in the crown will not solve it, and we will tell you so rather than sell you a cut that will not help.

Why Will You Not Top A Tree?

Topping means cutting the main branches back to stubs with no regard for where the next branch actually begins. It is still offered around here as a fast way to make a tall tree shorter, and it does the opposite of making it safe.

The tree responds by producing a dense mass of new shoots attached only to the surface of the wound, not to sound wood underneath. Within a few years the crown is heavier and weaker than the one it replaced, while the stubs beneath it are quietly rotting. We do not offer topping at any price.
