Why Do Trees Drop Dead Branches?
A tree stops feeding a branch long before that branch actually falls. The wood dries out over several seasons, becomes brittle, and eventually breaks away on its own, which is when dead branch removal becomes urgent rather than routine.
Booking dead branch removal ahead of time is safer and cheaper than waiting for the tree to drop the branch onto a car, a roof or a walkway on its own schedule.
Which Dead Branches Should Be Removed First?
Some dead branch removal needs attention sooner than the rest. A branch that has already broken but is caught in the tree will come down eventually, and what matters most is what sits underneath it.
We treat these as urgent:
- A broken branch caught in the crown or hanging by a strip of bark - Dead wood above a driveway, walkway, doorway or parked vehicle - Dead wood over a sidewalk or a public road - Any branch touching or close to a hydro line
A dead branch over open lawn, with nothing valuable underneath it, can usually wait for a scheduled visit. We will tell you plainly when that is the case rather than treat it as an emergency it is not.
How Can I Tell If A Branch Is Dead?
There are four signs worth checking from the ground, and any one of them is worth a phone call:
- No leaves in July while the rest of the tree is fully green - Bark falling away in flakes, showing grey wood underneath - Mushrooms or shelf fungus growing on the branch or at the base of the trunk - Pale patches on the bark of an ash tree, where woodpeckers have been feeding
If you are not certain whether dead branch removal is needed, we will come and look at no charge.
Dead Ash Trees Are A Common Problem Around Aurora
Ash trees can be a genuinely difficult job once they have died. The branches turn brittle and break in unpredictable ways, which creates real risk that only an experienced crew should take on.
Plenty of dead ash trees remain standing across Aurora and the wider region. We carry out dead branch removal on an ash, or take the whole tree down, whichever keeps your property safest. Regular dead branch removal on a mature ash reduces that risk before the wood turns brittle.
What Happens During A Dead Branch Removal Visit?
We look at the whole tree before starting, not only the branch you called about. Dead wood often turns up in more than one place, and dealing with it in a single dead branch removal visit costs less than coming back twice.
During dead branch removal the wood is lowered carefully on a rope rather than dropped, so nothing below is damaged. Everything is then chipped and cleared, and the area is raked before we leave.
